I need not get into my background with Kenyan pop and rnb femcee Phy Ngetich (because you can read about some of it here).
She is as talented as she is beautiful and coming from a simple village life to making quite the name for herself in the big city, it was superb getting to sample her newly released sophomore album ‘BiograPHY’.
Yes. A million shillings and a record deal later, Phy has stamped her name on our indutry proving she’s a force to reckon with by collaborating with the likes of Khaligraph Jones and King Kaka (on RUKA) and thereafter, topping charts with her own solo ‘Taboo (Taabu)’.
Being juts as good a LIVE act as she is in the studio, Phy returned to her roots of Cover songs (renditions) with BiograPHY which in her own words, ‘pays homage to Kenya’s biggest artists and Kenya’s most iconic singles.’
Last weekend (Dec 11th), we had the pleasure of hosting both Phy and her producer Tim Rimbui where we both sampled and talked about the album.
Tim who’s notably had his imprint on our music scene for over a decade praises the art of covers describing it as a way to uplift and celebrate our own industry. He also went on record with regard to how it was like to recreate some of the songs, my favorite being ‘Twende Tuka Wake’ ft Syd (originally by K Rupt).
Of what we also talked about was which song Phy most enjoyed working on, which she found challenging and well, how it was like to create musical renditions to songs that were already major!
Lucky for you, this new-school sounding, trap infused and house affiliated album which is definitely one I bet you’ll want to put on repeat is available for free on Phy’s YouTube channel.
